Airport Surface Access
Strategy at Biggin Hill Airport
-
Transport Planning Services
Bettridge
Turner & Partners have prepared an Airport Surface Access Strategy
(ASAS) for Biggin Hill Airport on behalf of Regional Airports Limited.
Biggin
Hill Airport is one of only three airports in Greater London and
the only one in London to the south of the River Thames.
The ASAS
takes account of expansion plans at the airport and includes a broad
range of measures to reduce the proportion of journeys made by car.
The Strategy centres on improvements to bus services and connections
to surrounding rail stations and to the Tramlink terminus at New
Addington, only 1.5 miles from the airport.
At present,
about 94% of trips to the airport are by car and only about 2% by
public transport. A challenging target of 25% of passengers arriving
by public transport has been set for 2015. Due regard has nevertheless
been given in the Strategy, to the need to provide a good level
of accessibility by car, which will continue.
The
ASAS was prepared in consultation with the Air Transport Forum (ATF),
set up by the airport operator. The ATF has a wide range of members
including local and adjacent highway authorities, transport providers
and representatives of employers and employees based at the airport.
